Jane Eyre (2011 film)

Director: Cary Joji Fukunaga

Taken from a novel written by an English novelist and poet Charlotte Bronte, Cary Joji Fukunaga directs the movie, Jane Eyre, a story that talks about a compelling love story between a governess and her master with a twist of horror hidden by a secret.

The film stars Mia Wasikowska, who plays the role of Jane Eyre. It opens with where the heroine struggles to escape from the Thornfield’s hall desperately seeking shelter elsewhere. She then finds herself in the company of kind strangers, Mr. John Rivers and his two sisters Dianne and Mary. The movie continues its story from the narration of Jane Eyre’s struggles as she grows from being an outcast niece of Mrs. Reed to being a strong and independent woman as a result to the strict education that she had at Lowood’s school. Jane Eyre eventually took the step of becoming a governess at Thornfieds where she finds the love of her life and the pain it takes to have it.

Although the movie did not fail to maintain its subtleness as is perceived in the novel, it somehow lacks details on some parts of the movie. For one, it did not explicitly tell why the little girl, Adele, is under the care of Mr. Rochester. Another would be the reason behind the insanity of Mrs. Birtha Rochester; I believe that would have helped the audience understand more as to why Mr. Rochester’s love for her never existed. Without taking these to consideration, the movie as a whole is intellectually done. The actors are able to religiously portray the characters assigned to each of them. The movie is not a disappointment when it comes to the time and place it wants to convey. It’s not like any other films for which the setting appears to be from centuries ago but the ladies are wearing their dress with a very low neckline that deliberately overflows their breasts. Everybody knows how conservative that time it is supposed to be set.

There are actually clips posted in youtube for some of those removed scenes. Here are two of them:
